Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that you may have questions about trauma therapy, EMDR therapy and EMDR intensives. This FAQ section provides answers to some of the most common inquiries, but feel free to reach out if you’d like more information or have specific questions about how we can help you.

  • What is EMDR and how does it work?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic memories. Through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR facilitates the brain's natural healing process, allowing distressing memories to be reprocessed and integrated in a healthier way.
  • How is EMDR different from traditional talk therapy?
While traditional talk therapy focuses on discussing and analyzing thoughts and feelings, EMDR targets the underlying traumatic memories that contribute to emotional distress. By directly addressing these memories, EMDR can lead to faster and more profound healing.
  • Will I need to talk in detail about my traumatic experiences during EMDR?
One of the benefits of EMDR is that it doesn't require you to relive or extensively discuss traumatic memories. Instead, we focus on the memories and associated emotions, allowing your brain to process them without the need for detailed verbal recounting.
  • What can I expect from an EMDR session?
In an EMDR session, we'll work together to identify specific memories or experiences you'd like to address. You'll be guided through sets of bilateral stimulation, such as tappers that you hold in your hands, while focusing on these memories. This process helps reprocess the memories, reducing their emotional charge and allowing for healthier integration.
  • How many sessions will I need?
That all depends on where you're at in your healing journey and what your overall goals for EMDR are. While there is no "magic number", typically clients coming in for adjunct EMDR look to achieve their results in 10 - 12 sessions. Those seeking EMDR Healing Intensives can expect to see results after their first 2 - 3 hour session, with results continuing with additional sessions. Those seeking to relieve a particular single event will likely see results faster, whereas those who are looking to resolve issues from childhood that spanned a longer period of time, or events that happened frequently, may benefit from more intensive sessions. Ask your therapist about the expected length of treatment during your free consultation.
  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with EMDR treatment?
EMDR is generally considered safe. Some individuals may experience temporary increases in emotions, feel more sensitive to external reminders, have increased memory recall or vivid dreams as the brain processes memories. These reactions are typically short-lived and are part of the healing process. We'll work together to ensure you feel supported and have resources to help with any after effects of treatment. However, there are certain medical and mental health conditions and situations that may require a more thorough evaluation: in some instances, EMDR can be conducted after specialized treatment, medication and/or a medical clearance. In other instances, your therapist may determine that EMDR is not an indicated form of treatment and you may be referred elsewhere. Therefore, it is very important to let your therapist know if you have any major medical issues, such as heart conditions, neurological conditions (such as history of seizures) or are pregnant. It is also important to communicate whether you are feeling unsafe in any way, such as experiencing suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, are actively self-harming, using controlled substances, or are in a dangerous domestic situation. Those who have a history of hallucinations or delusions or have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia disorder may need more specialized treatment. Please address any questions or concerns with your therapist prior to starting treatment.
  • Are EMDR Intensives effective?
Yes, many clients find EMDR intensives to be highly effective. By dedicating focused time to the therapeutic process, individuals often experience significant progress in a shorter timeframe compared to traditional weekly sessions.
  • How do I know if Brief EMDR or EMDR Healing Intensives are the right fit for me?
Determining the best approach depends on your specific needs, goals, and the nature of the issues you're facing. During our initial consultation, we'll discuss your concerns and collaboratively decide on the most appropriate treatment plan, whether it's traditional EMDR sessions, an intensive, or a combination of both.
  • How do I get started with scheduling an EMDR Intensive?
To begin, reach out to schedule an initial consultation. You will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire to help your therapist get a better idea of your goals and consider what treatment might be best before you meet. Then, during your consultation, we'll discuss your goals in more detail, assess your suitability for EMDR, and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
